Reflections from our Bookshelf: Rebel: Find Yourself by Not Following the Crowd

Rebel: Find Yourself by Not Following the Crowd

By: Graham Cochrane
Reflection by: Emily Nelson

Why I read it?

This book was the recommendation of Kylie Felker. Upon reading, I was excited to see the foreword written by Jon Gordon, author of “The Energy Bus”, which is another one of my favorites and was previously highlighted in our team reflections. The title grabbed my attention as I have been looking for different ways to push myself out of my comfort zone.

What is it all about?

“Rebel” is about the importance of being authentic – understanding who you are and how you want to use your individual talents and motivations to impact others.  It has reminded me of the value of speaking up and making my voice heard, even if my thoughts are different from those around me.  This book encourages readers to embrace who they are, challenges them to dream big, and provides the tools to take action.

What caused me to pause?

This book acknowledges that our lives are crafted by other people: family, friends, social media, societal expectations, etc., which encouraged me to take a deeper look inward.  In doing so, I began to wonder: How are these outside voices impacting me?  How are they influencing the way I think?  Are they causing me to hold back from giving the world my truest self?

How will this book change my habits or influence me?

At times, I have found myself trying to fit into the mold that others expected of me (people-pleaser over here!) but would feel frustrated when I knew that I wasn’t being authentic.  “Rebel” helped me break down my goals and values to find more clarity on my purpose.  This “Life Purpose Matrix,” as Cochran calls it, is a tool that I know will serve me when making decisions and identifying what opportunities I want to pursue. While empowering me to truly show up for others, this book has also reminded me to pay closer attention and show appreciation for the unique talents and abilities of those around me!

Add this to your reading list if…

You are looking for a push to live your life more authentically and embrace your truest self, talents, creativity, and joy!

Pickle Rating: It’s a 4 out of 5 for me!

Bonus: The Rebel’s Journey:

  • Resolve to dream again
  • Establish the outcomes you want in your life
  • Break negative thoughts, habits, and patterns
  • Engage in rebellious new thoughts
  • Let go of outcomes and others’ opinions
