The Art of Encouragement
By: Jordan Montgomery
Reflection by: Jenny Hagadorn
Why I read it?
The Foster Victor team gets to work with Jordan on professional development multiple times a year, so it was only natural that we read his book!
What is it all about?
In each chapter, Jordan highlights one method of “Art” of encouragement. Not only does he explain how and why it works by showing how your actions make a person feel, but he also calls the reader to action. At the start of the book, you are asked to make a list of people in your life that you want to encourage. At the end of each chapter, you are tasked with implementing the method discussed and noting how it pans out. Jordan uses personal examples throughout, so it’s easy to draw parallels to your own life.
What caused me to pause?
This book really opened my eyes to that fact that in every relationship in our lives, even if we are not the “leader,” we have an opportunity to impact others. Often, we all find ourselves just going through the motions of our days– especially if our job title doesn’t include “leader” or “manager.” Jordan makes it clear that with our colleagues, family members, friends, and even those who lead us, our words and actions do matter and can drastically change someone’s day or even their long-term development. You never know what interactions people will remember years down the line!
How will this book change my habits or influence me?
After reading this, I have noticeably become more intentional in my day-to-day life when I choose my words. Each time I find myself passively living through a scenario and conversation, I stop myself and really think about how I can make a positive contribution. It has also made me take a step back and reflect on the people who have impacted me most, and have gratitude for those who have been so intentional in their interactions with me.
Add this to your reading list if…
You want an outline for how to positively impact others in your life, no matter what the relationship is, and you are looking for the extra push to do so!
Pickle Rating: I would give this book a 4.5 out of 5!
