Reflections from our Bookshelf: Unreasonable Hospitality

Unreasonable Hospitality

By: Will Guidara
Reflection by: Bri Prosser

Why I read it?

Unreasonable Hospitality came highly recommended by Paul Foster as a book that I would enjoy and appreciate. Spoiler alert: he was right!

What is it all about?

Will Guidara, a former co-owner of a 3-Star restaurant in New York shares what he did to make their business stand out. It’s less about the food and more about the way they aimed to make their guests feel, going above and beyond to provide unreasonable hospitality and the success happened to be a side effect of those efforts.

What caused me to pause?

My copy of the book is now full of sticky notes, highlights and pen marks to help me remember all the important points. One quote that stood out to me is “Intention means every decision, from the most obviously significant to the seemingly mundane, matters.” Putting intention into every decision, even if it means a one percent difference, makes a huge difference when all put together.

How will this book change my habits or influence me?

It caused me to think deeper about how to best care for people and encouraged me to put thought into even the smallest of actions because you don’t know the impact on someone else. I can’t wait to put these into practice with not only my co-workers but our clients as well!

Add this to your reading list if…

You want to know how to love the people close to you even more deeply – which should be everyone!

Pickle Rating: 5 out of 5
