Winning: The Unforgiving Race to Greatness

by Tim S. Grover

Reflection by Aliza Coleman

Why I read it?

Truthfully, I’m not an avid reader. However, I set a personal goal at the beginning of the year to read six books, and Winning was selected as part of the Foster Victor Book Club! While it’s not a book I would typically pick on my own, the sports theme caught my interest.

What is it all about?

Tim Grover is known for training elite athletes such as Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, and Dwayne Wade. While reading Winning, you can quickly realize why his guidance was sought after. Each chapter focuses on a different principle of winning: selfish, never loyal, never lies, and knows all your secrets. Grover doesn’t romanticize the journey to success; instead, he provides a tough-love look at what it takes to be great without taking shortcuts or making excuses.

What caused you to pause?

It’s been a while since I trained or played a team sport, and the book allowed me to tap into that mindset again. Grover’s honest and raw take on being committed challenged me to think of areas in my life where I can push harder, even if I’m not on a sports team. A few of the questions that came to mind were: Where can I be mentally tougher? Where can I be more disciplined? Where is an area where I could have less hesitation?

How will this book change your habits or influence you?

Reading “Winning” has already created a change in my daily mindset. On days where I have very little motivation or find myself wanting to make excuses, Grover’s message helps me recenter my mind on what it means to show up relentlessly.

Add this to your reading list if…

You’re in need of some motivation or some tough love! I tend to be a competitive person but not always self-motivated, and this book gave me the push I needed. Winning separates itself from other motivational books by providing a wake-up call, like a coach that really cares about you.

Pickle Rating: I would give this book a 4 out of 5!
