Reflections from our Bookshelf: Raising Grateful Kids in an Entitled World

Raising Grateful Kids in an Entitled World

Why I read it?

The title of this book caught my eye. By seeing just how fortunate my own son is, I also realize how ungrateful he can be at times. I think it is very important for children to learn at a young age to appreciate the things they have. I also believe that when you work for something instead of having it handed to you, you appreciate it even more.

What is it all about?

This book is written from the point of view of a mother raising her children and how she went through many different stages of wanting to give them the world. The author goes on about how she would give in to the “Keeping up with the Joneses” mentality, but she came to realize that this was not what she had imagined. Raising kids is hard, and raising kids who are grateful and show few signs of entitlement can seem downright impossible at times. She explains that just giving our kids everything they want and handing them the world only leads to bigger problems down the road. The difference between “want” and “need” is a huge focus of what she tries to drive home with her own children. She gives many practical tips and shares many stories about her own experience bringing up hardworking, grateful, and successful kids.

How could you use this book with children?

This book can be very useful for parents of children of all ages. I have the perfect opportunity to teach my child the importance of working hard and sharing that he should be grateful for what he has because there are many less fortunate than him. I can also show him that just giving him something isn’t going to help him grow in any way. Instead, when he earns the money to go buy his favorite toy it will mean more to him and he will want to take care of it.

Add this to your reading list if …

your children are having trouble being thankful for things they have or don’t have.
